Heart and Mind

It’s mid-February and life has suddenly become B U S Y!  I not sure why this still comes as a surprise. It’s actually quite predictable, yet we walk through the hallways of our buildings, rolling our eyes, shrugging our shoulders, muttering something about Crazyville.

This is no time for the weak of mind and heart. It takes purposeful planning to stay the course, but stay the course we must.

To keep my heart-mind balance the priority over doing, I mindfully, respectfully, carefully, put ME first. My priorities are as follows:

Family – You bet! With all the press at work to do things now, to be the best, to advertise that best, I’d have given up ages ago if I didn’t know in my heart that this profession of mine, as important as it is, is a job! Family is my life. After that, choosing is easy. For the record, family includes ME!

That’s it. That’s my priority. At the end of the day, when my work life is done, do I have energy and time for my family? If I don’t, if I’m consistently too tired to engage with those who abide in my heart, then I have a problem.

This push-pull relationship with work-family lives equally in my heart and mind. My generous heart pulls in all directions; my mind shouts, ‘enough’! When I don’t listen there tends to be trouble.

These are my tells:coffee therapy

Am I sleeping enough?

Do I crave carbs more than usual?

Do relatively small things, command a BIG response?

Is staying focussed difficult?

Do I feel like I care less?

Is irritation often my first reaction?

Do I cry more than usual?

Out of necessity I’ve learned to pay attention early. A wise mentor of mine gave this advise, “Take a day before you have to take a week. Know when to stop and regroup”.

It may cost me my job to say this…but…‘it’s only a job’.

While you celebrate February, with hearts, love, hugs, and tons of doing, remember to take care of you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, hit that pause button…now. Give yourself time to re-balance your heart-mind connection. Meditate, push into your faith, s l o w down. YES, you can slow down. You may need help. You may need a champion to remind you you’re worth it. Listen to your friends, your family, your colleagues.

We’re here for the journey.
